Harrier League III

03/12/2014
Round three of Nene Valley Harrier's popular winter 5k handicap league took place on a chilly winters evening at Lynch Wood. Here's Barry Warne's report.

It proved to be a successful event for Yaxley Runners and Joggers with four of their athletes leading the field home. Paul McCarthy, running his first race of the series, took maximum points with a time of 22:41. He was followed home by Paul Atherfold with Sarah Endicott and Barbara Johnson just seconds behind.

The fastest time of the night was set by Rhys Goddard, a member of the host club. Goddard, cousin of Nene Valley Harriers stalwart Ruth Jones, is improving rapidly and his time of 16:46 represented a personal best. His battle with Simon Fell of Stamford Striders, who ran a solid time of 16:54, was the highlight of the evening. The pair ran stride for stride throughout much of the race, with Goddard pulling away towards the end to cap a highly pleasing evening for the 22 year old.

With the 6 race series halfway through the battle for this seasons championship is starting to hot up. Thorney Running Club member Andy Cowling leads the way, followed closely by the Yaxley pair of Matthew Benton and Barbara Johnson.
