Darrellon Holding also competed well recording 23.62s for the 200m finishing 5th out of 18, under 17 and senior men and ran a tough 400m when he hung on despite tieing up for 52.07s to finish 10th out of 26 athletes.

The only other Nene Valley athlete was Ian Aunger who ran a 2:19.2 800m to finish 21st out of 24 athletes in the under17 and senior mens event.

NENE Valley Harriers ace Georgie Ivens clocked the fastest 300m time at a North Of England Open meeting at the England Institute of Sport based in Sheffield.

Ivens overcame the disadvantage of being drawn on the inside to power to victory in a 42.52 - the quickest of any Under 17 girl on the day.

Clubmate David Bush ran 39.12 in his first-ever 300m race and also clocked 2.53.37 for 1,000m despite being hampered by injuries sustained in a rugby match a few days earlier.

Birmingham Games, 01/02/09

Georgie Ivens ran in the Birmingham Indoor Games. She came third overall in the U17 300M, in a new club indoor record of 42.29secs. Missed second place by 0.04 secs. (Winner 42.00).

Medhurst makes a pleasing indoor debut at Lee Valley (Courtesy of Peterborough Evening Telegraph)

By Bob Frank
NENE Valley Harrier Steve Medhurst ventured onto the boards for the first time at the weekend and came away with two medals from the Southern Counties Veterans Indoor Championships at Lee Valley.

Medhurst (41) was two seconds inside the championship best performance in the 800m but it was still not enough to win gold. But his time of 2.12.6 was his best for two years and earned him a silver medal.

He also ran in the 400m where his time of

57.8 seconds – more than two seconds quicker than on his last outing over the distance two years ago – earned him the bronze medal.

Medhurst said: "I had never run indoors before and it was something I fancied having a go at. I'll now have a go at the Easterns and Nationals and, having now run indoors, I would hope to be even quicker next time.

"It was certainly an experience running on the banked bends as I was in lane five for the 400m so it felt like I was coming down from the Gods. It was nice to win a couple of medals because it's been a long time since I've done that.

"My last championship medals were probably as a junior. I ran four minutes dead for 1500m as a 17 year-old but it's been a long time since I've won medals."

Now, after making the podium, Medhurst is planning for a record-breaking summer.

He added: "The cross-country season has gone well because I haven't been injured for a while and I hope to keep it going until the track season when I will attempt to break some club records.

"Sean Beard's Over 40 mark for the mile is 4.45.6 and I feel I can challenge that and Nick Overton's 800m record of 2.06.3 is another I will go for."

ATHLETICS: Georgie's effort on Valentine's Day comes up roses

NENE Valley Harriers were loving Georgie Ivens' lifetime best 300m on Valentine's Day.

Her terrific run was not quite enough to take a medal at the England Athletics (AAA) Under-17 Indoors Championships.

But fourth place in 42.09secs was a personal best and moves her club record forward. It also sets her up well to qualify for the outdoor equivalent championships in the summer.

Coach Ken Maggs said: "Georgie's determination and effort was second to none.

"She fought hard to qualify and then the commitment she showed in the final was deserving of the medal she just missed out on.

"As far as we are concerned, she has made her family and coaches proud of her."

Georgie was set a target of reaching last Saturday's final in a competition which included some of the UK's top under-17 female athletes.

And she qualified for the final by winning her heat. She showed great strength in moving to the front round the final bend and controlling the last 50 metres.

Other girls in the final included the outdoor champion Victoria Ohuruogu, sister of Beijing Olympics 400m gold medalist Christine.

The poor weather has meant that training for Georgie has been scarce over the last two weeks.

But she showed determination and effort to challenge for a medal right through to the line and just missed out on third place.

Her run was within 2.3 seconds of winner Ohuruogu, showing that she can perform with the best in the country.

Maggs added: "It was a great championship performance, which is tougher than performing in one-off races due to the need to refocus and take responsibility for looking after her body in the period between heats and finals."
