Lincs XC County Champs

Here's Ken Maggs' report how our Lincs athletes fared:

Under 17 men and Senior ladies dominate Lincolnshire County Championships!

On Sunday 4 January 2015 it was time for the cross country athletes to shake off the Christmas cobwebs and get back down to business, the Lincolnshire County Championships at Riseholme, Lincoln. A good haul of medals won and also some very close misses showed the strength we have with the squad split between Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire. the course was very wet under foot with the frost never clearing despite the winter sun.

Two county champions and lots of podium finishes.

Our senior ladies squad demolished the strong Lincolnshire club sides and Philippa Taylor running in the younger age group than her masters status won the race comfortably ahead of team mate Charlotte Taylor. These ladies were supported by Cat Foley with an unfortunate 4th place but winning team gold.

The ladies were followed in by the under 17 men's team with which NVH showed complete domination of the category. Alex Hampson ran most of the way on his own to win almost as comfortably as Philippa had on the course at the same time. The NVH team were only split by one Lincoln Wellington athlete with Bradley Spurdens winning bronze and Niam Payne in 4th place. The B team was not split from this finish with Nathanial Taylor 5th, Michael Cawood 6th and Austin Herbert 7th giving NVH the gold and silver team awards. A complete dominance of the event only split by one other team athlete.

We were unable complete a team in the under 20 men's race but did take silver and bronze medals with Jake Richardson and James McCrae respectively

Ethan Ellison ran well to chase in the strong Louth winner, who had dominated the Lincolnshire league and claim his individual silver medal. He was followed by William Wright who just missed a medal with 4th and Elliot Bellamy who put recent injury aside and finished 8th. This gave the team a good win ahead the strong young teams at Louth and Sleaford.

Megan Ellison then repeated her brothers feat with a strong silver only beaten by an exceptional Lincoln Wellington athlete. Alice Callcut just missed out on individual medal in 4th place but won team gold with the support of Paula Naylor in 12th.

The under 15 boys team grouped together well and took the team silver medal. Nathan Davey just missed out on a medal in 4th, Keilin Spurdens 10th, Bradley Allen 11th and supported by Oliver Smith in 12th who just missed a team medal.

Hermoine Wright was our only athlete competing in the under 17 ladies and finished a very creditable 7th place.

The only NVH athlete in the veteran men's age group was Paul Parkin who finished 31st which was disappointing for the athlete who as a younger version would have been at the front of such a field. Returning to the sport as a master is proving tough for Paul but is a good example to us all.

The under 13 girls followed the men out of the field and took the team bronze medal with Calypso Priestly (7th), Hanna Ray (13th), Zoe Cawood (21st) and supported by Ffion Lewis (22nd).

Cheers and Happy New Year
