NVH athletes had a successful outing at the Bedfordshire AAA Opening Meeting at Sandy on Saturday (Apr 5). Here’s Ruth’s report.

Alex Hampson produced the performance of the day when he won the 1500m A race by more than 20 seconds in a time of 4:20.3. It was Hampson’s first outdoor track race of the 2014 season, and shows great promise for the summer months ahead.

Cat Foley also ran well to place third lady in the 3000m in 10:46.2. Club mate Emily Brand was 4th lady overall in 11:49, and second U17, while Austin Herbert had a strong race with a time of 9:58.5.

Also impressing the local crowds was the Harriers’ superb field athlete, Andrea Jenkins, fresh from her successes at the World Masters Indoor Championships in Hungary. Jenkins won the discus A competition overall in 41.94, beating all of her male rivals in the process. Young club mate Isaac Huskisson won the B event in 24.89, and placed second male in the shot put with 9.25. Jenkins also excelled in the hammer throw and shot put, placing first lady with distances of 45.65 and 10.10 respectively. Lydia Church won the B shot put competition with a fine throw of 9.52.

Ellie-Mae Stokes had an impressive win in the A javelin event with 31.21, while 10-year old Jose Downes won the B long jump competition with 3.91.

Bradley Spurdens produced a strong performance to place fourth in the 800m with a time of 2:03.5, and Michelle Tweed ran well to place first lady in the 200m, crossing the line in a swift 27.9.
Every Harrier who competed produced fine displays, which bodes well for the rest of the track season.
