How to find Wells-next-the-Sea

Found on the North Norfolk Coast, Wells-next-the-Sea is a popular holiday destination with good Wells quayroad links to the major towns in Norfolk and beyond.

From Peterborough and Spalding:

From Kings Lynn take the A148 to Fakenham. At the roundabout with the Shell Petrol Station, take a left towards Cromer. Take your first left towards Wells and Walsingham, then the first left on to what is known as the Dry Road. This road takes you straight in to Wells, with a short drive to the Quay.

The Beach

A quiet moment aloneThe beach at Wells-next-the-Sea, and on to Holkham to the West, is one of the most beautiful areas of North Norfolk. Located 1.5 miles from the town, the sandy beach opens out to the North Sea. You can walk or drive to the beach, or take the miniature railway which runs up to the Pinewoods Camping Site.

It has earned it's own fame being used in the filming of the final scene of the 1998 film Shakespeare in Love. The video for All Saints single Pure Shores was also filmed on the Beach. More recently it has been used for the ITV drama Kingdom along with other areas of Wells and the nearby town of Swaffham.

Coach, Ken Maggs sprinting up the dunesThe site offers the perfect chance to walk (or in NVHs case - run) along the beach and through the Pinewoods forest then have a paddle in the sea, followed by a hot drink in the cafe or picnic with NVH friends in the sand! Usually after lunch the club athletes (mums, dads, relatives and friends included) join together to play games and generally have fun in the sun (don't forget your sun cream and even a light jacket just in case it rains). Dogs are welcome along this part of the beach but please bring them plenty of water and remember those little 'doggie bags'. At the end of the day there will be a traditional fish and chip supper on the sea wall by the quay in Wells. Have a great time and let's hope we can enjoy some beautiful weather - see you there at 11.00 am on Sunday 25 July, 2010!

History of Wells-next-the-Sea

Wells-next-the-Sea is located on the NorthRuss Prosser, taking it easy under doctors orders! Norfolk Coast. Its prime location meant that in the late 16th Century, Wells (as it was known) was the major port for the area, with up to 19 ships trading corn. Several of the old buildings can be found down the back streets. Well's status as a port carried on well into the early 20th Century, with the Granary and loading gantry built in 1903. This has now been turned into luxury flats with a Quayside view.

The History of the Name

The name Wells comes from the many spring wells that were around the town.

Wells became known as Wells-next-the-Sea in the 1800s when the increase in travel meant it was needed to distinguish between towns. The name was chosen as the town's official title by Wells Urban District Council in 1956.
