Athletics: Mixed fortunes for city's clubs
Published Date: 30 July 2009
By Bob Frank. Peterborough Evening Telegraph
THE city's two leading athletic clubs had mixed fortunes in the Southern Women's League at Milton Keynes.
Peterborough Athletic Club finished second in their match but Nene Valley Harriers were last in theirs and now face a battle to avoid relegation.
Rachel Stone was in superb form for PAC with two middle-distance victories, taking two seconds off both her 800m and 1500m personal bests (PB) while Sarah Caskey – soon to go to America to study art – also produced two wins, supporting Stone with a 1500m B-string success and also winning the A-string 3000m.
Stone also received good support in the 800m where youngster Georgie Freeman took the B-string while Nichola Gibson (400m), Emma Houghton (high jump) and Devon Spencer (triple jump) recorded B-string wins.
Veteran Melanie Brown, formerly of Woodford Green with Essex Ladies, made her PAC debut and took a tenth of a second off her 200m PB.
Teenager Jenny Cade produced a couple of PBs, adding 14 centimetres to her shot best and three metres to her discus figures.
Nene Valley lie third from bottom in the table although it wasn't a case of their athletes performing badly, they simply didn't have enough of them.
Captain Andrea Page has now urged her athletes to support the club in their final match as they bid to stay up.
Just three senior, two Under 20s and two Under 17s turned out for the club and not surprisingly they brought up the rear.
Andrea Jenkins and Kelly Lawrence teamed up for a hammer A and B-string double although such were the numbers that Jenkins found herself in the B-string 100m as well as four throws.
Georgie Ivens broke the minute for the 400m for the first time outdoors as she won in 59.2 and she also improved her hand-timed PB in the 200m.
Fellow Under 17 athlete Charlotte Taylor took three seconds off her 800m personal best to win in 2.19.8 while Amelia Susulowsky and Michelle Tweed were the other Nene Valley athletes to support the club on a disappointing afternoon.
