Blunden brushes his rivals aside
Published Date: 18 July 2009, Bob Frank, Peterborough Evening Telegraph

AFTER a day spent painting his new home, Deeping athlete Matt Blunden brushed aside his rivals to win the penultimate race of the Peterborough 5k Series at Stamford.
Blunden recorded his third 5k win at Stamford, having also succeeded in 2006 and 2007 when the Matt Blunden wins 5K race at Stamfordrace finished outside the Danish Invader pub. On Wednesday night the race reverted to the old course, finishing on the field of the rugby club, and Blunden came home with 24 seconds to spare over Neil Addison. With a steep descent followed immediately by a very tight turn and a long uphill drag on each of the two laps, Stamford is a course where good pace judgment is important and Blunden never looked in danger. He went through the opening kilometre in 2.52 and was always in control.

Blunden was 10 seconds ahead of fellow Royal Air Force runner Tom Bailey at halfway, followed by Charnwood triathlete Peter Swaine, Addison, Spalding’s John Pike and Bourne’s Matt Grace but he pulled further away to win in 15.35.

He said: “I felt strong. I wanted a hard run and I felt better than I did in the Great North 10k (three days earlier, where he ran 32.28).”

With two wins and a second, Blunden is virtually assured of the title as only Addison – with a win and a second so far – can stop him.

Blunden will seek further glory in the Inter-Services Championships 5,000m on Wednesday and may run the Notts 5 two days later hoping to break 25 minutes for the first time.

He added: “My best is 25.15 (set in 2004) although I must have broken 25 minutes for five miles during a 10k. It would be nice to get under that barrier.”

Addison, after a month of no running whatsoever and then one week of steady running, finished second in the Bushfield 10k last Sunday but felt much better at Stamford.

He said: “I’m happy with that. I didn’t want to go off with the leaders because Matt put in a fast opening kilometre but I got to halfway feeling okay, better than I had felt at halfway in the Bushy 10k, and then I gradually pulled clear in second.”

Philippa Taylor of host club Stamford won the women’s race in 18.18, making it four wins out of four. She is now in two minds whether to go for the full set at Werrington, where potentially she could Amelia Susulowskychallenge her personal best of 17.57 on a flatter course.

Becky Cousins of Fenland Running Club came through well to take second.
She was alongside Nene Valley Harrier Amelia Susulowsky at halfway but went 10 seconds ahead on the second circuit to finish runner-up while Susulowsky just held off Wittering-based Stacey Kirby for third.

Jack Moore sealed the junior 3k title in a repeat of the previous race at Eye.
Steph Burton & Jack Moore a boys and girls NVH double
Just as three weeks earlier, Ross Huskisson led coming onto the grass field for the finish and this time it looked as though he may have a big enough lead to hold on.

But Moore outsprinted his Nene Valley clubmate to win by four seconds – his third win of the series. Steph Burton maintained her 100 per cent winning record to give Nene Valley a boys and girls double.
