Delighted Harriers seal their promotion
Published Date: 23 July 2009
By Bob Frank, Peterborough Evening Telegraph

NENE Valley Harriers earned promotion on Sunday when winning at Halesowen to clinch the McCain National Young Athletes League Midland Division Two title.
They were easy winners, with a margin of 117 points over Stratford upon Avon, as they ended their first season in the league in style.

The Under 17 men were particularly dominant with A and B-string doubles in the 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 1500m steeplechase, high jump, triple jump, shot, discus, hammer and javelin.

Indeed, it was only the long jump where Nene Valley suffered defeats in that age group although Darrellon Holding was making his debut in the event and had chalked up 100m and 200m wins while Rob Jacobs chalked up two wins and a second.

Harry Wells produced three A-string wins, including yet another hammer throw beyond 50 metres. The 800m saw Sam Hunt just outsprint Tom Rodgers with only a tenth of a second separating the pair.

The Under 17 women were also in excellent form with Georgie Ivens recording three A-string wins and Georgina Igoe doing likewise in the B-strings.

Jake Appleby won the A-string discus, B-string shot and took second in the A-string hammer – an event he had never tackled before joining Nene Valley this season.

Emily Maltby and Alice Dolan each recorded three wins in the Under 13 girls age group while Steph Burton took a second off her PB when winning the Under 15 girls 800m and she also took the B-string javelin.

Nene Valley coach Russ Prosser is now looking forward to competing in Midlands Division One East next year and bidding for a place in the Midland Premier Division.Isaac & Ross Huskisson

He said: “Having lost to Stratford upon Avon in our previous match we knew we needed a strong team but in the end we hammered them.

“Only one team goes up and we wanted to make sure it was us and we enjoyed an excellent meeting, despite the wet conditions.

At times the track looked more like a swimming pool.

“We’ve had to make a few sacrifices and didn’t send too many to the East Anglian League, but we made winning promotion a priority and thankfully we achieved that.”

Milkman grounded (extract from The Peterborough Evening Telegraph, 24th July 2009)
NENE Valley Harriers coach Russ Prosser was soon brought back down to earth following his club's promotion in the National Young Athletes League.

Playing for Crowland Methodists cricket team, he had his sights on further glory as he effortlessly moved on to 16 not out . . . only to then pull his hamstring.

He looked far from athletic as he was carried off and wasn't best pleased when his doctor told him to rest for 10 days.

"Who's ever heard of a milkman having 10 days rest?" he protested.
