'Running in the Rain', EAL 3, Cambridge, 19th July, 2009
Report
Dominant PAC successful in five age groups
Date: 23 July 2009
By Bob Frank, Peterborough Evening Telegraph
PETERBOROUGH Athletic Club (PAC) were in dominant form at the East Anglia League at Cambridge, winning the overall match and also five of the seven age groups – placing second in the other two.
Their senior women produced the biggest winning margin, beating hosts Cambridge and Coleridge by 39 points, with Sharna Emanuel recording a sprint double.
She ran a fine 12.7 in the 100m and edged out Nene Valley Harrier Michelle Tweed by a tenth of a second in the longer sprint. Emily Moss (400m), Laura Arnold (300m) and Emma Houghton were also A-string winners in the age group for PAC.
Moss had set a personal best of 2.13.54 when fourth in the 800m at the British Milers’ Club meeting at Watford in midweek and followed up by finishing seventh in the 400m hurdles at Saturday’s McCain Birmingham Games in 64.47 before lining up at Cambridge.
Dave Longman’s side enjoyed a 100 per cent winning record in the female age groups with the Under 13s and Under 15s also successful.
Stephanie Williams and Georgia Woods teamed up for a sprint hurdles double in the Under 15 age group, both clocking 12.2 with Woods equalling her personal best (PB). She also won the high jump while Simi Pam recorded a shot and discus double including a PB in the latter.
Just as in the Under 15 age group, the Under 13 girls produced a sprint hurdles double, Ella de Lucis winning the A-string and Katherine Amps taking two tenths of a second off her PB in the B-string.
In the male age groups, the Under 17s and Under 13s came out on top, the former by a comfortable 23 point margin.
Ashley Watson recorded a sprint double although Ross McConnachie went faster than him when winning the B-string 100m, where he equalled his PB of 11.6.
Adam Kimber won the javelin by nine metres while James Murtagh was a comfortable winner of the B-string.
Daniel Stephenson recorded two A-string wins (1500m and shot) for the victorious Under 13 boys side while the Under 15s produced some good individual displays although PAC were beaten by five points by the hosts.
English Schools long jump champion Joel Grenfell has not been defeated in that discipline for 10 months and 6.30m-plus jumps have become the norm since his gold medal in Sheffield earlier this month.
He also won the 100m and made a winning 400m debut when taking the B-string in a useful 55.1 – faster than the winning A-string time.
Fellow English Schools medallist Max Everest won the sprint hurdles and high jump while Jake Berney weighed in with a couple of sprints wins, taking the A-string 200m and providing solid support for Grenfell in the 100m.
The senior men also finished second behind Cambridge and Coleridge, despite Adam Smithwinning the high jump and taking second in the long jump with a PB of 6.30m. Councillor Matthew Dalton was their only other A-string victor in the sprint hurdles.
Nene Valley, who were low in number in the younger age groups due to a clash with the McCainNational Young Athletes League, were very strong in the senior men’s throws.
Ken Baker and Simon Achurch recorded four wins apiece but lacked support as Nene Valley still only finished fourth in that age group.
The third league match was held at Wilberforce Road Sports Ground,
Wilberforce Road,
CAMBRIDGE,
CB3 0EQ - on Sunday 19th July 2009, against teams from:
Cambridge & Coleridge, Peterborough AC, Colchester & Tendring, Leighton Buzzard, Luton, CONAC
