Athletics: Below-strength Harriers battle for second

NENE Valley Harriers put up a good show in their penultimate Southern Men's League Division One fixture at Thames Valley but had to settle for second place.

With Ben Jones, Darrellon Holding and Harry Wells missing due to competing at the English Schools, Nene Valley gave a fine display to remain fourth in the table.

Nene Valley got off to the perfect start as Sean Reidy maintained his 100 per cent winning record in the Southern Men's League 400m hurdles races. Chrs Wright ran his first track 5000m of the year and took 40 seconds off his personal best to win comfortably.

Peter Lewis and Adam Fidgett teamed up for maximum points in the pole vault while the throwers were once again in fine form.

British masters champion Ken Baker recorded two wins, Simon Achurch produced a couple of victories and a pair of seconds and Andy Wain added more than two metres to the club record he set last time out in the hammer.

Sam Lawrence went beyond six metres for the first time this year to take the long jump and he also set a PB for third in the javelin.
