Wain smashes records after five year lay-off
Published Date: 02 July 2009
By Bob Frank, Peterborough Evening Telegraph

ANDY Wain returned to action for the first time in five years and broke two club records as Nene Valley Harriers won their Southern Men's League Division One fixture at Ipswich.
Wain was a talented thrower in the late 1990s and set the current senior club records of 49.90m for the discus and 14.62m for the shot in 1997 and ‘98 respectively.

He later made headlines all over the world when in 2005 he faced a disrepute charge after ‘sending himself off’ after becoming involved in an altercation with a player while refereeing a football match.

Although he has not competed in athletics since then he has kept in touch with Nene Valley and was invited to have a few throws just a few days before the meeting when turning up to ‘say hello’ to friends at club training night last week.

He took up the challenge and impressed sufficiently enough to be asked to compete at Ipswich, where he broke two veteran club records. Both records were previously held by Nene Valley team manager Tim Needham so perhaps he is now regretting asking him to compete!

Needham had set the hammer mark of 34.12m in 1995 and the discus record of 30.12m a year later but has now been removed from the record books after Wain won the B-string hammer with 34.98m and threw 33.58m as a non-scorer in the discus.

The fact he was a non-scorer is down to the ability of Ken Baker and Simon Achurch. Baker was below-par at Ipswich due to a cold but Achurch produced three B-string wins and a second in the A-string hammer.

It wasn’t just the throwers who impressed though as the 4x400m quartet of Ben Jones, Darrellon Holding, Adam Binns and Sean Reidy broke the 18 year-old club record of 3.24.4. The previous mark had been set by Danny Tudor, Dave Privett, Bob Collin and Giovanni Rizzo but Needham believes the current squad, who have won the event in all four fixtures this season, can go even quicker.

Given his storming third leg, perhaps Binns should run more 400m races while the other three relay members all impressed individually. Reidy chalked a 400m double, winning both the flat and hurdles races, Holding (below) ran a personal best in the 200m and Jones ran a useful 56.9 in the 400m hurdles but suffered his first defeat in the event this year.

Sam Lawrence improved his personal best in the javelin as did Chris Wright in the 1500m and Harry Wells in the high jump

The 3000m steeplechase saw both John Lunn and Dave Newton run personal bests although they each had to settle for second place.

Adam Fidgett won the B-string pole vault as Nene Valley moved up to fourth in Division One, but they face a tough task in the penultimate fixture at Thames Valley next week as Jones, Holding and Wells will all be missing due to the English Schools Championships at Sheffield.

Former Nene Valley Harrier John Pike of Spalding ran for Newham and Essex Beagles, clocking 16.41.9 to finish second in the B-string 5000m.
