Peterborough 5k Series: Neil leaves it late to steal the honours
Published Date: 07 June 2009
By Bob Frank, Peterborough Evening Telegraph
Hampton’s Neil Addison made a late decision to compete in the opening race of the Peterborough 5k Series and was rewarded with an impressive victory at Ferry Meadows.
The 31 year-old had not planned to race as he has been struggling with a series of colds this year - causing him to abandon plans for a marathon debut in London.
Just nine days earlier he had been disappointed to run 31.27 in the Bupa London Run 10k, having felt he was in shape to break 30 minutes had it not been for yet another sore throat, but an improvement in his health led to a late decision to line up and he recorded his fastest 5k time when winning in 15.11.
Addison ran alongside occasional training partner Matt Blunden for the first four kilometres but then stepped on the gas and from then on the result was never in doubt.
Having run kilometres of 3.01, 3.05, 3.02 and 3.06 he produced his first sub-three minute kilometre of the race to win by 11 seconds. And clearly the effort had not been too taxing as he then ran home.
He said ‘I just ran alongside Matt for the first 4k and then pushed on. I felt good and never had any doubts that I would win and I don’t see any reason why I won’t now give the rest of the series a go.
It was a bit windy so my plan was just to sit in and then kick with a kilometre to go and it worked really well. I didn’t have any time targets, I was just looking to win, and I probably kicked with about 1100 metres to go and quickly opened a gap.
Matt and I know each other well as we've trained together occasionally and once I kicked I was confident I would win.
Blunden was far from disappointed after playing second fiddle. He said ‘I wasn't far outside my best track time for the whole of last year (15.07.8) and to do that so early in the summer is pleasing.
I’m getting into my best shape ever and I’m confident I can now build on this. We were running kilometre splits just outside three minutes but Neil then took off at 4k and I couldn’t stay with him.
Next Wednesday I’ll be representing the Combined Services against Loughborough University but I hope I’m able to do the next race in this series a week later.
Former series champion John Pike from Spalding ran well for fourth place while Jon Massingham of Eye Community Runners set a club record of 17.04 in 14th position. He previously shared the old record of 17.19 with club champion Darren Ping.
Reigning champion Philippa Taylor won the women’s race with Nene Valley Harriers youngster Amelia Susulowsky 25 seconds back in second.
Taylor has been in good form recently, setting a personal best of 37.20 at King’s Lynn last month, and victory was never in doubt for the 41 year-old.
She said ‘I had a horrible start as there were so many people but I soon got into my stride. I’d run around 15-16 miles around Rutland Water two days ago but then took yesterday off as there is no point in doing these races if you've trained hard the day before. I really enjoy this series as the races are well organised and I certainly hope to do at least three of them to try and retain my title.
